Internationally recognised for our innovative approach to teaching, our Department of Law and Social Sciences brings together a range of diverse subjects and develops multi-skilled professionals who strive for social justice.

From politics to policing, criminology to sociology, and through the lens of law and development, we explore the factors that inhibit equality of opportunity and impact the human experience. We are critical in our approach, and we believe in empowering students to be agents of change in society. The intellectual and practical skills, contemporary knowledge, work experience and global perspective we offer will leave you poised to pursue a range of rewarding careers worldwide.

We have a long history of academic engagement with criminology and sociology. Our culture is welcoming, valuing diversity of people and experiences. We are committed to the importance of ideas and knowledge to the world we in which we live. Our teaching programmes are shaped by engagement with real world contexts, through student placements, internships, and student-led projects. We offer a focus on one-on-one support through skills audits, volunteering and work placements.

Our research has international impact, engaging with issues ranging from crime, policing and violence to digital technologies, feminism and popular culture. We are involved in a wide range of partnerships, from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local authorities to national and European agencies. In these partnerships, we provide research, consultancy and professional development support.

You’ll benefit from real-life projects and close links to industry with key criminal justice agencies such as the Metropolitan Police and the Probation Service. We also give you the choice of taking your studies abroad for a semester at one of our partner universities in America or Europe.

At postgraduate level, you’ll get expert support for further study and advanced workplace experience, to build your career in criminology and policing.
